Din 1893 pana in 1897 a locuit in Paris, unde a studiat la Académie Julian, vizitand deseori Saint Petersburgul. In 1899, a co-fondat impreuna cu Sergei Diaghilev influentul periodic Mir Iskusstva, "World of Art."
